March 2. Lake Guntersville, AL. Sometimes what’s needed most is to stay put and thoroughly explore a spot. That was the lesson for UNC’s Eric Self and Shane Lehew as they paced themselves to a convincing win in the FLW Southeastern Conference event on Lake Guntersville, Alabama. They caught five quality bass for 23 lbs 14 ounces jig fishing a rocky point. Lehew explained:
“None of the fish were biting any of our moving lures. We really had to slow down … After moving to our second spot the first bite we got was a two and a half pounder and the next two were both over five pounds. We decided to stay there and work that spot over and over, for the rest of the day.”
Lehew has been fishing FLW events all the way back to 2006. He and Self will be fishing BFL and college tournaments this year. For their trouble they took home to NC a check for $2,000 and a place in the Southeastern Invitational.
Bethel (Cody Ross and Dewey Swims) found the big bass bite for second place with 19 lbs exactly, made up of just three fish. The University of Alabama – Birmingham (Frank Doganiero and Gregory Cain) salvaged some home state pride with a third place, five-bass catch weighing 17 lbs 10 ounces.

FLW hadn’t made available photos from this event at the time I posted, but I’ll stick them up on facebook as soon as they come in.
